On September 29, 2015, Sony confirmed that sales of the PlayStation 3 were to be discontinued in New Zealand, but the system remained in production in other markets.

Its successor, the PlayStation 4, was released later in November 2013. The system had a slow start in the market but managed to recover, particularly after the introduction of the Slim model.

The reception would get more positive over time. A Super Slim variation was then released in late 2012, further refining and redesigning the console.ĭuring its early years, the system received a mixed reception, due to its high price ($599 for a 60-gigabyte model, $499 for a 20 GB model), a complex processor architecture, and lack of quality games but was praised for its Blu-ray capabilities and "untapped potential". It was lighter and thinner than the original version, and featured a redesigned logo and marketing design, as well as a minor start-up change in software. It no longer provided the hardware ability to run PS2 games. In September 2009, the Slim model of the PlayStation 3 was released.

So I made a new PSN account as an adult around the time of PS4 launch, leaving behind my trophies for 100s of games, and my preferred old username too - I did this because there was no resolution to the problem in sight and I don't think Sony had even acknowledged it. I can't remember the exact details but I think you couldn't buy things from the store, potentially couldn't be a PS+ member (not sure on this one), and couldn't use some PS4 social features. I bought all of these things and then realized my experience was severely limited because I had a child account, despite being an adult.

Later down the line when I was a grown ass man with my own job I wanted a PS Vita, my own PS3 instead of sharing and a PS4. My family made me a child account because I was somewhere around 12 or 13 when we got our PS3. Sony in their infinite wisdom did not include a way for sub-accounts to be promoted to master accounts when the user turned 18. People set up their children as 'sub' (child) accounts to their master (adult) accounts. When PSN launched the userbase had no idea just how incompetent PSN would be.
